about essie – usa’s nail salon expert since 1981

Since 1981, the iconic American brand has allowed women all over the world to express themselves with unique and whimsical colour names. Essie aims to inspire a love for the manicure & pedicure experience with a wit and style that touches the hearts of women everywhere. Since it’s introduction by Essie Weingarten, the brand has delighted the colour-obsessed with a love shared all over the world.

There’s absolutely nothing not to love about Essie, I mean after all the brand is responsible for making International Nail Polish Day, which is like the biggest day for all of us nail enthusiasts. It’s fair to say that Essie is perhaps the most famous, loved, trusted nail-polish brand out there – adored by beauty professionals, industry insiders, celebrities and fashion icons.

Every season, we look forward to seeing new colours and new formulas to indulge our nails in, but whilst we wait let’s get to know the well-known nail brand one on one.

It’s named after a real person. Essie Weingarten, the founder of the brand, is originally from Queens, New York. She moved to Las Vegas to push her nail-polish business because she knew women there take extra care in their appearance. It worked, and within a year, she was in 10,000 salons nationwide.

Three shades that still exist today were from the original launch in 1981. They’re classics: ‘Blanc’, ‘Bordeaux’ and ‘Baby’s Breath’.

Essie vending machines are a real thing that exists. In 2014, the company began installing the dispensers, which hold 54 bottles of nail polish, at select airports and malls across the country. Consequently, we all have one fewer excuse for chipped nails.

Ballet Slippers is royally-approved. The company has sold more than 10 million bottles of it since its debut. You’d think that was because of it’s Best Of Beauty Award-Winning Nail Polish, right? Well, it is also a royal favourite. In 1989 and still to this day, it is Queen Elizabeth’s go-to shade.

Chances are, if you’ve ever had a manicure or pedicure, you’re familiar with the work of Essie Weingarten. Her eponymous award-winning line of nail polishes and nail care products are a strong favourite within the nail industry even after a strong 37 years.
