All nail polishes become thick and dry over time. It can occur when the lid is loose, or the nail polish has been open for a long time. But don't throw out your gloopy nail polish just yet! Bring your old varnish back to life with paint thinner for nail polish!

Can you use nail polish remover as thinner?

Although you can use acetone to thin your nail polish as a temporary solution, we don't recommend it. When nail polish dries, the solvents evaporate. So, you must replace the solvents to restore the polish's consistency. Nail varnish thinner is specifically formulated to replace the evaporated solvents without disrupting the formula. In contrast, nail polish remover contains acetone, which can break down the polish's components, affecting colour, quality, finish and longevity.

How do you make nail polish thinner?

So, if you have old nail polishes, either at home or in the salon, we always recommend investing in a dedicated nail paint thinner to prolong the life of your polishes. Here's how to use them effectively:

    1. Take your thickened nail polish, and either with an eye dropper or the inbuilt pipette, add 2-3 drops of nail polish thinner into the nail polish bottle.

    2. Mix gently, but avoid shaking vigorously, as this creates air bubbles. Instead, screw on the cap and roll the bottle between your palms to ensure the thinner mixes thoroughly.

    3. After mixing, test a small amount of polish on your nail or a test surface. The ideal consistency should be smooth and easy to apply.

    4. If the polish is still too thick, add another drop or two and repeat until you are happy with the results.

Be careful not to overuse the thinner, as too much can make the polish runny and difficult to work with. You can also use it to clean the bottleneck to help the cap close better and prevent the polish from drying out again.
