The Breakdown

You might have heard some whispers about an ingredient called TPO being banned in the UK. We know regulatory talk can be a bit of a headache, so here’s the "no-nonsense" version of what’s actually happening—and why you don’t need to clear out your nail desk just yet!

First Things First: Don’t Panic!

The big date to remember is February 14th, 2027. After this date, shops like us (Nail Polish Direct) won’t be allowed to sell products containing TPO.
But here is the good news: You can absolutely keep using your TPO gels after February 2027! If you’ve got your favourite builder gel or top coat in your kit, you don’t have to bin it.

The new rules only stop us from selling it to you after that date. Your existing stock is still 100% fine to use on your clients or yourself.

What happens next?

At Nail Polish Direct, we’re already one step ahead. We are working closely with all our brands to bring you TPO-Free and HEMA-Free alternatives that perform just as well (if not better!).

The Bottom Line:

  1. Stock up on your favorites before Feb 2027.

  2. Keep using what you’ve got in your kit after that date.

  3. Relax—we’ve got your back with the latest, safest tech as it arrives!

The Full Guide - The TPO Update: What Every Nail Professional Needs to Know for 2026 & 2027

If you’ve been scrolling through industry forums lately, you’ve likely seen the letters “TPO” popping up more than usual. At Nail Polish Direct, we believe in facts over fear. As the UK’s leading professional nail partner, we’re here to break down what the new TPO regulations actually mean for your salon, your kit, and your clients as we move through 2026.

What is TPO, and why is it changing?

Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) is a photoinitiator—the magic ingredient that helps your gel polish cure instantly under a UV/LED lamp.

The UK and EU regulators have recently reclassified TPO due to new, ultra-strict safety guidelines for chemical manufacturing. While independent experts agree that TPO is perfectly safe when applied to the nail and cured correctly, the industry is moving toward "Next-Gen" alternatives to meet these evolving standards.

Think of TPO as the "match" that starts the fire. When your gel nails go under the UV/LED lamp, TPO reacts to the light and triggers a chemical chain reaction. This is what turns your liquid gel into a rock-hard, high-gloss finish in 60 seconds. It’s been the industry standard for years because it’s incredibly efficient and doesn't turn white or clear gels yellow.

The "Great Britain" Timeline: Mark Your Calendars

Unlike the EU (where the ban happened faster), the UK has provided a clear transition window for our professionals in England, Scotland, and Wales:

  • 15th August 2026: Manufacturers can no longer "place on the market" new batches of products containing TPO.
  • 14th February 2027: This is the "Off-Shelf" date. After this Valentine’s Day deadline, retailers and distributors (including us!) can no longer sell TPO-containing products.
The Good News: You Don’t Have to "Bin Your Kit"

One of the biggest myths currently circulating is that you must dispose of your existing gels by 2027. This is false.
According to current GB guidance, the 2027 deadline applies to the sale and supply of products.

If you have purchased your favourite builder gels or top coats before February 14th, 2027, you are legally permitted to continue using that stock in your professional practice until it’s finished.

Your investment is safe, and your products remain compliant for use.

Why has it been "Banned"? (The Regulation)

The UK and EU regulators have moved TPO into a category called CMR 1B (Reprotoxic).

In simple terms, "Reprotoxic" means a substance that could interfere with fertility or a developing fetus. Under cosmetic laws, once an ingredient is put into this category, it is automatically banned from being sold in beauty products, unless the industry can prove there is absolutely no other alternative (which they couldn't, as new "TPO-Free" ingredients already exist).

The Reality Check: Is it actually dangerous?

The "ban" is based on Precaution, not a sudden wave of injuries.

  • The Rat Study: The ban came after a study where rats were fed massive amounts of pure TPO every day.
  • The Dosage: For a human to get the same dose those rats got, they would have to eat roughly 500 jars of gel polish every single day.
  • The Application: TPO is applied to your nail plate (which is dead tissue) and is then "locked" into a solid plastic once it cures. It doesn't enter your bloodstream.
