The nail lacquer top coat is the final layer you apply in the manicure process. Top coats create a high shine and glossy finish on the nails, instantly making them more professional.

Is a top coat necessary for nail polish?

You don't have to use a top coat with nail polish. However, it significantly increases your manicure's look, quality and longevity. So, top coats are necessary if you want your manicure to last longer and have a salon-quality feel.

Can clear nail polish be used as a top coat?

Although clear nail polish and top coats may look the same, their formulation is inherently different. Top coats are specifically formulated to resist chipping and peeling and often have ingredients that provide UV protection or a certain finish. You won't get the same protection and quality finish using clear nail polish as you would a top coat.

Does a matte top coat work on any nail polish?

Yes! You can use a matte top coat to mattify any nail polish colour. Simply apply over dried nail polish colour to create a matte finish.

Can I use a top coat as a base coat?

No! Base and top coats are formulated differently for different purposes. Top coats are designed to seal in nail polish and create a hard, glossy (or matte) protective layer. They are not designed to adhere to a nail bed unless the product is a 2-in-1 formula. If you use a top coat as a base coat, your manicure will likely chip and peel more easily because it won't have the proper foundation to adhere to.

What's the best top coat for nails?

Like base coats, nail polish top coats come in various formulas depending on what effect you want or what your nails need. Most top coats will provide a high-gloss finish, but look out for super-glossy or gel-like finishes to get gel-looking nails without gel polish. You can also get matte top coats that mattify your nail colour or glitter top coats for a sparkling finish.

Many top coats contain UV inhibitors to prevent your nail colour from fading or yellowing in the sun, perfect if you've just painted your nails for your holiday. If your nails need additional protection, you can get a nail varnish top coat with strengthening ingredients to reinforce them and prevent breakage.

And finally, if you own a salon and need to get as many clients in and out or are often in a rush when doing your nails, a quick-drying top coat formula is the best option.
