Which is better, UV or LED nail lamp?
People often prefer an LED light nail lamp or a dual LED/UV nail lamp for curing gel polish. Primarily because an LED nail lamp cures gel polish much faster (30-60 seconds) than a nail UV lamp (120 seconds). LED nail lamps also have a much longer bulb life, produce less heat and are more electricity-efficient.
On the other hand, UV nail lamps emit a much broader spectrum of UV wavelengths than LED, so they can cure a broader number of gel polish types. So, to cover all bases and universal compatibility, most opt for a dual UV/LED nail lamp.
UV and LED nail lamps emit UV light to cure gel, LEDs, however, emit a specific spectrum within the UV range. Numerous studies have concluded that the minimal UV exposure from professional nail lamps during a typical manicure is well within safe limits and poses no significant health risk, less than walking to your postbox on a sunny day. However, if you have any concerns or extreme sensitivity, wearing UV protection gloves or applying SPF hand cream (taking care not to get it on the nail plate) is always an option. Both are generally considered safe when used as directed. However, LED nail lamps typically emit less UV radiation due to their targeted wavelengths and faster cure times.
How to use a UV/ LED nail lamp?
Using a UV/ LED nail lamp is simple and straightforward. Once you've correctly prepped your nails for gel polish, apply a thin layer of gel base coat, cap the free edge and avoid skin contact. Whether you're applying a manicure or pedicure, place your hand or foot under the LED or UV nail lamp. Ensure your thumb and fingers are flat and all nails are directly under the light source to ensure even curing. Some lamps have indentations for fingers or a removable base for pedicures. Select the appropriate cure time on your lamp. This is crucial and will vary based on the specific gel brand, your lamp type and wattage. Press the timer button to start the curing process. Many lamps have automatic sensors that turn on when you insert your hand and off when the timer is complete. Repeat the process for your gel colour and top coat.
Remember not to overfill your UV and LED nail lamp. Ensure all nails are positioned properly under the light. For thumbs, you might need to cure them separately if your lamp is small or if your thumb sits at an awkward angle. If you feel a "heat spike" (a burning sensation), the gel is curing rapidly and generating heat. While normal for some gel nails, you can pull your hand out of the lamp for a few seconds (called "flash curing" or "pulsing") to let the heat dissipate, then put it back in to complete the cure. This is especially useful for builder gels or sensitive nails; some lamps have a "low heat mode" specifically for this.
