Applying a nail primer is essential in any manicure, helping to bond your gel polish to your natural nail by preventing lifting and extending wear. Whether acid-free or not, using a nail primer is the best way to make your manicure last.

What is a primer for nails?

A gel nail primer is a liquid solution applied to the natural nail after dehydration but before the gel base coat or nail enhancements. While a dehydrator removes oils and moisture to create a clean surface, a primer goes one step further to promote adhesion.

There are two different nail primer types: acid primers and acid-free primers. Acid nail primers are often used in salons by experienced nail technicians. They ensure the best adhesion between natural nails and nail enhancements by slightly etching the nail plate surface and creating a rougher surface for better adhesion. These are typically used for excessive oily skin or problematic nails that cause gel polish to lift too early. However, they are not recommended for at-home use. If you like to do your nails at home, we recommend an acid-free primer.

Acid-free primers have a gentle formula and are perfect for weak and brittle nails. Acid-free primers extend the wear of your manicure and are safe to use both in the salon and at home! They work by temporarily adjusting the pH of the natural nail to make it more compatible with the product being applied. Also, please allow your nail primer to dry for a few seconds after application for the best results.

Do you need a primer for gel nails?

While you might technically be able to get gel polish to stick without a primer, nail primers act as a bonding element between the natural nails and nail enhancements, improving the adhesion and longevity of your manicure, especially if you want your gel manicure to last its full 2-3 weeks without chipping or lifting.

Without a nail primer, your gel nails will start chipping and lifting after only a few days of wear. Using a nail primer also helps to prevent bubbles for better adherence.
